This past couple of days my computer has been really slow/freezing. I was on the internet when my Windows Firewall said it detected a virus. Then my computer started messing up and freezing, so I had to turn it off and open in Safe Mode. I’m scanning my computer with Windows Defender now, but so far it hasn’t picked up anything. I have McAfee as well (up-to-date), but it didn’t detect or try to stop the virus. I’m really not sure what to do. I can’t download an anti-spyware program because
1.) I’m too scared to load Windows normally
2.) Firefox always closes straight away due to the virus (in Normal mode)
What should I do??? Should I try to download an anti-spyware program in Safe Mode? I know I have a virus but McAfee/Windows Defender isn’t picking it up.

Found this when running Yahoo’s old (eTrust) Pest Patrol toolbar-based anti-spyware–I already use Norton Internet Security, so no real use to run the new anti-spyware program they offer for the Yahoo toolbar.

I need an anti-virus,firewall, spyware adware, trojan, keylogger and etc. protection program, and that will delete, quarantine etc. any existing infections, problems and etc. in my computer. Also that it is the complete, full version of it, and not a trial version, soemthing i can keep for a long time. Sooooooo, any good suggestions?

A few weeks ago, I had spyware on my computer and I purchased an anti-spyware program, ran it on my computer and now it seems to be running fine. However, when I use any type of search engine, every time I click on the links it brings up, it brings me to some random website that usually advertises some kind of product. Example, say I wanted to find a website for graduation announcements, I type “graduation announcements” into the search engine, and all the websites come up, but it brings me to a website like “godaddy” or something. I have tried uninstalling internet explorer and mozilla, but nothing I do works. Does anyone have any idea what to do? I’m technologically challenged, so I don’t know what to do! Thanks so much in advance.

I used my three recovery CD’s I had made a year ago and re-did everything. I ran AVG, Norton, and several other anti-virus programs. Here is what is going on: From my Yahoo main page, I do a search. On the search results page, EVERY search result is a re-direct to buy junk or fake anti-spyware programs! When I have Google search as main page, this doesn’t happen. I can’t find any original discs, just my three recovery discs. Those took 2 1/2 hours to re-do the hard drive! I thought that would take care of it. Okay, DON’T click on this or cut and paste it: http://rds.yahoo.com/*bleep* is what is the problem. That “bleep” is a bunch of letters and numbers that re-direct Yahoo search to send me to a website to sell me junk. This virus/adware program seems to be the only one left on my computer. FIVE anti-virus sites have failed, and three recovery discs have failed, and I can’t find any original software for my HP Pavilion laptop (bought in 2006). Ideas??
By the way, I did ALL of the anti-virus stuff in Normal mode AND safe modes.

My little cousin was browsing through my computer when there was this pop up that came and advised me to dowload a anti-spyware program called antivirus2008. I was really stupid and installed it until i found out, that it was the cause for the spyware so I tried to deleate it but it kept reinstalling until i used my Window’s live care to do a quick scan and clean it. After that it seemed that it was back to normal until i went on google and every page i clicked on from google sent me to a random page so i tried the full scan on windows live care and found a virus so i cleaned it. Then my computer went extra super slow, like 5 minutes for a page to load and the next day it was all back to normal, but 2 hours later it seems like my computer hasbeen hi-jacked again because i try to click on a link on google but it takes me to another search engine, so WTF?
